Video / Art / Festival : Quel(s) objet(s) ?

The VideoArt Festival Locarno will be approached through a cross study of the « festival »’s dispositif and its object. The reflections held during the Monte Verità colloquiums regarding the need to adapt the classical models – university, museum, festival – to the current technological changes will be discussed in relation to the debates of the early 1970s in which Berger had taken an active part. He thus in particular pointed out the « confrontation » inherent to the syntagm of « video art », by considering that the potentials of the video, in its quality of means of communication, were much vaster than the strict artistic sense, pertaining to a modernist approach of the specificity of the medium.

The object of the VideoArt Festival is in fact multiple, as shown by the progressive opening of the event to other artistic and technological categories. A phenomenon that will become more complex in the 90s, with the remediation of formats through digitization, amplified by the development of a global communication network. Faced with this form of reactivation of the medium as information, fluid and instantaneous, the question arises of the adaptability of the VideoArt Festival model as conceived by its creators. This will be considered in relation to the phenomenon of the festivalisation of culture that has developed since the 1980s, but also by taking into account other cases and networks of previous festivals. Finally, the VideoArt Festival will be approached as a meta-structure, whose interactions and dynamics, inherent to the different models used, will be analyzed: film festival, international conference, university, observatory. In this respect, the unrealized project of Televeritazione, envisaged by Rinaldo Bianda as a reactivation of Monte Verità’s past in the form of an information center on art and technology, will contribute to understanding the singularity of the VideoArt Festival.
